Q: We have a one-year-old metal door on our
front entranceway with white vinyl trim around the
glass window that has turned yellow where the
sun hits it. Is there any way to clean the yellow off
and prevent it from discoloring again?
A: All metal doors when purchased have a
primer coat unless otherwise specified. The
plastic trim on steel doors will turn yellow if not
painted within six months. This is caused by the
ultra violet rays of the sun. Once the trim has
yellowed you cannot clean it. The only remedy is
to paint it.
To finish steel doors, first wash my Home
Cleaning Formula using a scotch brite pad (not
steel wool). Wash both sides and rinse with
clear water. Remove Hardware; select your
color and paint with a best quality exterior semi
gloss acrylic latex (EcoLogic available through
Cloverdale Paint would be a good choice). It’s
important to note that I do not recommend an oil/
alkyd paint since it will not resist the expansion
and contraction of the metal caused by the sun.
This will cause the paint to crack and peel. You
will require temperatures above 10 degrees
Celsius and do not paint in direct sunlight.

Q: My wallpaper is lifting at the seams.
Is there a way of repairing it and can
you also let me know what would be
involved in removing it all together.
A: To repair loose seams in wallpaper;
insert the tip of an adhesive
applicator underneath the seam.
Apply the adhesive onto the
wall and press the seam
back into place. Using an
edge roller, roll the seam
and remove any excess
adhesive with a moist
sponge.
To remove the wallpaper: Begin at the top and pull the face of the paper straight
down flat to the wall. Apply a wallpaper removing
solution to the backside. Allow the solution to
migrate between wall and paper releasing paper
from wall. You may need to rent a steam driven
wallpaper device.
Make your own wallpaper remover:
Mix 1 cup of fabric softener to one litre of warm
water – Apply with a sponge and allow to remain
wet for 2-4 minutes, rinse with warm water and
sponge

Q: In our bathroom we noticed water lines on
the walls, I wipe them down and yet the lines
remain. Do you know why this has happened as
well as what we might do to correct this?
A: First thing I would want to make sure of, is
you have and are using a bathroom fan, for a
minimum of one hour after every bath or shower.
If the lines are not disappearing when wiped
down, the moisture has gotten in behind the
paint and the only remedy is to prime and paint
the walls again.
First wash walls down with my Home Cleaning
Formula, sponge rinse and let dry. Use an alkyd
primer to seal all walls, then paint with Ecologic
eggshell or semi-gloss paint, available through
Cloverdale Paint.

Q: I have an aluminium shingle Future Roof
that is black and approximately twenty years
old. The shingles are starting to oxidize and
lose their colour, what would be a good
cleaner and paint to fix this problem?
A: First clean the roof with my Shell Busey Home
Cleaning Formula, rinse well and let dry. Use
Flood Penetrol Paint on the aluminium shingles;
do not do this in direct sunlight. For more
information on this product visit www.flood.com
